What is drop shipping?
You can have a website selling anything tangible without holding stock, handling products and packing and posting them!
How? By selling products stored by a wholesaler or manufacturer who is prepared to drop ship the goods.
This means your customers' orders are directed to the drop shipper who delivers the goods on your behalf.
This seems to be an ideal way to make money on the web. You just collect the money from the customer and pay the supplier, keeping a profit for yourself without any outlay.
Points to check, when making an arrangement with a drop shipper:
- Are the prices really wholesale? You need to shop around.
- Is there a sufficient margin in the selling price to make it worthwhile to you? Check what competitors are selling these goods for.
- Is supply of the goods guaranteed?
- What is the lead time (the time between your customer's order and ultimate delivery)?
- What is the returns policy? - Can you customer return direct to the drop shipper or must they come back to you.

Ideally, you choose a product that you would like to sell, then find a supplier who can drop ship that product at the right price.
Some drop-shippers may want some assurance that your business with them is viable. Some will only drop-ship for businesses with a track record. Others may only want to know your ABN.
